Do AI girlfriend apps have voice, answered directly: many do, in one of two forms, and whether it counts depends on how integrated it is. Voice is the feature that most reliably separates a finished companion product from a chat window with ambitions. It is also the criterion where marketing and reality diverge most, because "voice" on a feature list can mean anything from a polished live call to a single robotic text-to-speech button. Two shapes of voice
Before scoring anything, separate the two things the word "voice" hides. Voice messages are discrete audio replies: the companion answers in a recorded clip you play back, like a voice note from a friend. Voice calls are a live, continuous conversation with real-time turn-taking. The difference is not cosmetic. Calls feel more present, but they demand low latency, because a half-second of dead air mid-sentence breaks the illusion instantly. Messages are far more forgiving of delay, since you are not sitting in silence waiting for a reply.

Three things decide the C-02 verdict, and none of them is "does it sound nice," because that is subjective and not something we will fake a measurement of.
- Presence. Is voice actually in the product, or a coming-soon promise? A feature you cannot use does not pass.
- Integration. Does voice ship as a standard part of the companion, or is it a separate tier, a fragile add-on, or a third-party workaround? Standard clears the bar; bolt-on earns a partial at best.
- Latency, for calls. Where a platform offers live calls, the delay between your words and the reply is what makes or breaks the feature. Message-based voice is judged more leniently on timing because the format expects a pause.
Character.AI's live calls are the clearest example of the call-first approach in the mainstream field, and they pass C-02 comfortably even though the platform fails our NSFW criterion.
